What sign is Rick Sanchez?
Rick Sanchez is the "Rick" of Adult Swim's Rick and Morty. Creators of this eclectic yet totally genius cartoon are Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon. I think they wrote the pilot sitting on the floor of some fast food joint on their laptops in about six hours. And it's been a whole lot of wacky genius ever since.
There's nothing I love to do more to work the astro in my mind than play "What sign is..." and I have to wonder about Rick? He's so many things, yet he feels as if all existence means nothing, including his own.
A little about Rick, so you can play along; here was once a normal family man on the verge of giving up science when his wife was tragically killed, leaving him and his young daughter, Beth, who as an adult, could possibly be a clone.
Rick keeps a suicide hat on his workbench at all times, loathes his son in law, tolerates his grandchildren, yet drags his grandson, Morty, with him on life threatening adventures because it seems he actually enjoys his company.
Often drunk and belching, the self proclaimed "Smartest man in the universe" Rick spews pearls of wisdom to his family, making one wonder if his claims of not giving a sh*t about them are truly valid. He informs his granddaughter, Summer, that she doesn't belong in school because smart people don't go there. Yet at the same time he informed both kids that they were "pieces of sh*t" and he could "prove it mathematically." (An amazing piece of prose. I'm saving that one for my next big Facebook war over something dumb.)
So, what sign is Rick? With all of the science and need to always be at arms length from those around him, Aquarius is the obvious choice, with a Mercury in Capricorn thrown in there for wit and his mean streak.
But dig a little deeper, and here's a man who has sacrificed himself for his family, except the son in law that he loathes, on more than one occasion. He constantly questions why he's alive, and that life serves no purpose, though he lives it with vigor. I smell a Scorpio.
But for those who know astrology, or those learning it, Rick Sanchez is a fascinating case study into the 12 signs. He's no Aries, Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, Libra, Sag, or Pisces. I'll put my money on that. The fun is in the guesswork of what makes this one of a kind genius tick.
Am I right or totally off base? What do you think?
